Published price ranges, and how old they are

We only quote numbers we can source, and we tell you how stale they are.

SourceFigureDateCaveat
Cool Cat Fence (Texas)$30 to $60 per linear foot installed, six-foot wood privacy fenceAug 2025Statewide vendor blog
HomeBlue (Killeen)$15 to $24 per foot, $18 to $24 for six-footJune 2022Old; prices have moved

The gap between the two is large. Part of it is time, since lumber, labor and fuel costs changed between 2022 and 2025. Part of it is scope, because a statewide figure includes bigger metro markets. Neither figure is a quote from us or from any pro. Real quotes depend on your yard.

Arithmetic on the newer range, which is not a quote: a 150-foot run at $30 to $60 a foot would be $4,500 to $9,000. A 100-foot run would be $3,000 to $6,000.

The Killeen permit fee

The permit itself is small compared with the build. The City of Killeen's FY 2027 fee schedule (effective October 1, 2026) lists a fence permit at $0.30 per linear foot with a $70 minimum, and a $10 technology and application fee on top. By our arithmetic, a 150-foot fence works out to $45 at the per-foot rate, which the $70 minimum raises to $70, so about $80 with the technology fee. A 400-foot fence would be $120 plus $10. The city's permit sheet also warns that fees double if work starts before the permit is issued and that fences go through plans review. Confirm the current fee with Building Inspections before you budget, since schedules change each fiscal year.

Harker Heights publishes its own fee schedule. A search of the city site for its FY 2025-2026 schedule shows a fence permit at $45 plus a $10 technology fee; check the Building Permits page for the current number.

What moves the price

  • Footage and corners. Every corner adds posts and labor.
  • Height. Eight-foot privacy fences, where allowed, need taller posts and more material; Killeen allows up to 8 feet in side and rear yards.
  • Material. Cedar is more expensive than pine, per the Texas guide above. Chain-link generally costs less than wood, but we have no Killeen-specific figure.
  • Gates. Each walk gate and each drive gate is priced separately, and powered gates add electrical work.
  • Ground. Rock, slopes, roots and the clay soil described by the Texas Water Development Board change how deep and how hard the holes are to dig.
  • Tear-out. Removing and hauling off the old fence is often extra.
  • Concrete. Footings use concrete, and the amount depends on post depth and hole size.
  • Permits. Who pulls it, and whether the pro charges for the time.

How to compare two quotes

Lay the quotes side by side and compare line by line, not by total. Put these in a table of your own:

  1. Footage covered and the height of each section.
  2. Post material, size and depth, and how they are set.
  3. Picket or fabric type and fasteners.
  4. Number, width and hardware for each gate.
  5. Tear-out, haul-off and cleanup.
  6. Permit and Texas811 responsibilities.
  7. Start window, and the payment schedule.

A quote that is 20 percent cheaper and silent on post depth and permits is not necessarily cheaper. Ask the pro to explain the difference in writing. See installation steps for what a complete job includes.

What we do not know

We do not know your lot, your neighbors, or the current price of lumber this week. We have not verified any pro's rates. When you send the form, a local independent pro will give you a quote for your yard; that number is the one to use.

When a low number is a warning sign

  • No permit or Texas811 plan. Killeen's fees double if work starts before the permit, and digging without a ticket breaks state rules.
  • No post depth or spacing. That is where the long-term cost hides.
  • No mention of the old fence, gates or cleanup.
  • A big deposit and no start date.
  • A quote only by phone. Insist on writing.

What the city fee does not include

The city fee schedule says the general residential building fee does not cover fences, so a fence permit is billed on its own (FY 2027 schedule). It also lists a $60 penalty for a failed inspection of any kind. Neither is large, but both are avoidable with a pro who builds to the checklist. Keep a copy of the permit, the contract and the Texas811 ticket number; they are the paper trail if anything is disputed later.
